As the summer draws to a close and the first day of school approaches there are many changes as we transition to another school year. Back to school is a time to get back into a routine. We all experience busier schedules, helping with homework, transporting to and from sports and activities and managing the early morning rush to get out the door. I like to look at the start of school as a time to settle in again. Kids (and adults) thrive on schedules. Simple things like consistent bed and wake up times, and eating on a more regular schedule can be helpful. Our bodies like balance and the school schedule can provide that if you work with it. Nutrition Matters: Food For Thought…

Recently I had the opportunity to see a very powerful movie called “Food Inc.”  The movie was directed by Robert Kenner and was based on the book entitled “The Omnivore’s Dilemma“, which was written by Michael Pollan.

I chose to write about my experience with this eye opening film due to the profound impact it has had on me and my family. I talked about seeing this film over the summer and felt somewhat like a detective tracking when and where it was playing through the films website. It was only playing in select theaters and for a very brief period of time. I finally caught up with at the Strand Theater in Clinton on a Sunday afternoon, and opted to bring along my two children who were ages 14 and 12 at the time. Nutrition Matters: A Season Of Eating!

Thanksgiving Day, Ahh, quite possibly the biggest eating day of the year! Many estimate that most Americans consume 3000-4000 calories that day alone! Wow!

As Americans gear up for the 2009 holiday season we ready ourselves for the inevitable… the holiday weight gain. Did you know that the average adult gains 5-8 pounds during the holiday season? Then like clockwork those same people spend the first quarter of the New Year hitting the pavement, racking up the miles on the treadmill and reacquainting themselves with the gym.
